ERIE – The Hall Red Devils strong performance at the Erie/Prophetstown Sectional Boys’ Track Meet came up just short for first place as they were edged out by four points (78-74) by the Sterling Newman Comets.
“I’m very pleased with my kids,” Hall coach Scott Malerk. “They
came out here and just worked their tails off. They performed the
best that they could. When you consider the teams here, to take
second place is a great accomplishment.”
One highlight on the night for the Red Devils was the final race of
the night, the 4x400 relay. Austin Pozzi took the baton back in the
pack on the final lap and raced to the front, leading until a final
surge by Eureka to edge him out. “I told the kids, ‘We need the
points, get sixth,’” Malerk said. “T.J. Mosbach said, ‘We’re going
to get second,’ and I said, ‘That’s even better.’ They ran their
tails off. I was talking with Pozzi and he said that he was numb
the last 75 meters. He didn’t know where the heck he was. That’s a
lot of heart and a lot of pride to finish the way that they
finished.”
In addition to the 4x400, Hall had success in the distance events.
Anthony Urbanski won the 800 with a time of 2:02.2 and Scott
Janusick won the 3200 and placed second in the 1600.
James Thompson and Austin Pozzi also qualified for a trip to
Charleston. Thompson won the pole vault at 13 feet, 6 inches and
Pozzi qualified with a second-place finish in the 300 hurdles.
Other place-finishers for the Red Devil was Pozzi, third in the
long jump and 110 hurdles and Tyler Sobin, fifth in the discus.
The Princeton Tigers will be sending a trio in the weight events to
Charleston next weekend. Evan Hale and Ethan Kloster finished 1-2
in the shot put with throws of 46-4 and 45- 3 1/2, respectively.
Jake Holland advances with by finishing second in the discus with a
throw of 135-8. Kloster also finished third in the discus.
Also scoring points for the Tigers were Blake Quiram (fourth) in
the 100 and the 4X200 relay (fourth), James Dove and Nathan Johnson

the triple jump.
